Modern glass tanks are constructed from sheets of glass sealed at the joints with silicone sealant, preventing leaks indefinitely in theory. The primary advantage of acrylic over glass is the lack of any joints. In addition glass tanks are more diffucult to ship due to prohibitive shipping costs, acrylic tanks have no such problems.
